This is not a crisis service. If you are in danger now, call 000. For 24/7 support, call 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732).
Straw person — a working model for discussion. Nothing here is live, and nothing you enter is saved.

How it works

Six steps. You set the pace at every one.

The Register is run by Violet Co Legal, a law firm. Anyone aged 18 or over can register, free, no matter when the harm happened. Recording is the only step that is yours alone; everything after it happens only with your say-so.

Step 01

Record

You tell us about yourself, the person who harmed you, and what happened — as much or as little as you want. We confirm your identity with photo ID so that no one can pose as you or pollute the Register. From this moment you are a Violet Co client and legal privilege protects what you tell us.

Step 02

Held

Your record is held in Australia by our solicitors, and by no one else. Nothing is done with it unless you ask. You can add to it, pause it, withdraw, or have it deleted at any time. If you would rather go to the police now, we will help you do that — recording here never gets in the way.

Step 03

Connected

Our software looks for records that name the same person. When three people have — you and two others — the connection is flagged. That may happen quickly, or take months or years, or never. We can't promise a match; we can promise you are a client either way.

Step 04

Reviewed

Before anyone is told anything, a Violet Co solicitor checks the connection is real — the same person, not just the same name — and that the records stand on their own. This is where a bad-faith report stops. Your accounts are kept separate throughout, so no one can say you influenced each other.

Step 05

Advised

We tell each of you, separately, that your record has connected with others — never who they are. A lawyer explains the options: a police report, a civil claim, Victims Services, the National Redress Scheme where an institution is involved, a workplace process, mediation, or a supported meeting. Your group votes on what, if anything, to do. If you can't agree, you can vote again or wait.

Step 06

Together

When the group agrees, one Violet Co lawyer represents you all from start to finish, and you are introduced to each other at the right time. What was your word against theirs is now three people's word — and a law firm's.

What if no one else names the same person?

Then you are still a Violet Co client. You can talk to a solicitor about your own options at any time, be referred to counselling, or simply leave your record where it is. The Register is a front door into everything Violet Co already does for survivors — it isn't a waiting room.

How is this different from reporting to police?

Reporting to policeRecording with the Register
Starts a process you don't control, once it startsStarts nothing. Every step after recording needs your say-so
The person you name may be told, and may be interviewedThe person you name is never contacted by the Register

Not ready for any of this?

That is completely fine. You can record and stop there. You can talk to 1800RESPECT first. You can come back in a year. What happened to you matters whether or not you ever take a step beyond this page.
